Cabinet of Ministers determines light industry as priority

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan has submitted a draft resolution on supporting light industry for public discussion. The industry has been declared a priority.

The document states that it combines textile and garment manufacture.

According to the National Statistical Committee, more than 36,700 people are employed in the light industry, excluding individual entrepreneurs.

According to an independent assessment, including related areas for the supply of fabrics and accessories, the industry employs over 160,000 people, or about 7 percent of the country’s working population.

The average salary of light industry workers is about 16,700 soms per month. The Ministry of Economy notes that in order not to lose the existing advantage, it is necessary to ensure proactive actions, significantly increasing the competitiveness of light industry products in Kyrgyzstan.

The National Development Strategy for 2018-2040 has already identified the textile and garment industries as priorities for industrial development. This sector will be reformed.

Officials propose to adopt a development program with a deadline for implementation until 2026. One of its main points is to exempt textile production from all types of taxes for 10 years.
